1 〔印〕 a mark; a print; an imprint; an impression; 〔汚点〕 a stain; (筋状の) a streak.
●血の a bloodstain; a blood smear; a spot of blood; a blood spot
・点々と続く血の a trail of blood spots; a trail of drops of blood
・涙の tear streaks 《left on the cheek》.
●つく leave a mark 《on…》
・窓ガラスによごれた指のがついている. There are 「marks from dirty fingers [dirty fingerprints] on the window pane.
・ほら靴のがある. まだ乾ききらないうちにセメントの上を歩いたやつがいるな. Just look at the shoe prints. Someone walked on the cement before it was completely dry.
・だれか濡れた靴のまま中に入ったのだろう. 廊下にはずっと靴のがついていた. Looks like someone came in with wet shoes. There were shoe prints all through the corridor.
・犯行現場の床には, 血のが点々とついていた. There were drops of blood on the floor at the scene of the crime.
・「ペンキ塗りたて」の張り紙のしてあるベンチには, てのひらのがついていた. There was a hand print on the bench with a sign on it saying “Wet paint!”
2 〔通った跡〕 a trace; a track; a trail; (獣類の) a spoor; (船の) a wake; 〔行方〕 sb's [one's] whereabouts 《pl. 〜》.
●車の通った a car track [the ruts made by a car] 《in the muddy road》
・鹿の通った the 「track [spoor, trail] of a deer 《in the snow》.
●台所の床になめくじの通った光っている. You can see a shiny slug trail on the kitchen floor.
●たどる follow a 「trail [track]; trail; track; trace
を残す[残さない] leave 「one's traces [no trace] behind (one)
をくらます conceal one's whereabouts; disappear without leaving any clue behind one; cover (up) one's 「traces [tracks]; (追跡者をまく) throw sb off the scent; 〔逃亡する〕 abscond; decamp
をつける track [shadow, follow, trail, tail] sb; dog sb's steps; follow in sb's track; follow (along) 「behind [back of, after] sb
・怪しい人物のをつける follow a suspicious 「character [person]

3 〔痕跡〕 marks; traces; a stamp; signs; vestiges; (証跡) evidence; (傷の) a scar; (むちで打った) a welt; a weal. [=けいせき1]
●進歩の signs [traces] of progress
・犬にかまれた(傷の) a scar from a dog bite
・蚊に刺された a mosquito bite
・消しゴムで消した鉛筆の traces of erased pencil marks.
●…のある[ない]. There 「are [are no] signs of….
・その紙には, 字を書いて消したがあった. There were 「vestiges [traces] on the paper of something that had been written and then erased.
・空き巣が入ったらしく, あちこち物色したがあった. Apparently a burglar had been there, because 「there was evidence [there were signs] that someone had 「rummaged [ransacked, searched] through the place.
・著者の苦心のが見える. 〔文章などに〕 There 「are signs [is evidence] of the author's 「great pains [painstaking effort]. | It is clear that the author has taken great pains.
・手には苦労のが刻まれている. Her hands bear the clear marks of hardship. | The scars of 「hardship [toil] are etched in her hands.
・書き込みのあるテキストに, 勉強のがうかがえる. You can see evidence of his study from the notes 「written [jotted down, made] on the pages of the textbook.
・検死の結果その男の溺死体には暴行のがあった. The autopsy revealed marks of violence on the drowned man's body.
・その顔には苦痛のが表れていた. Her face bore the stamp of suffering.
・手術のが消えずに残っている. I still have the scars from that operation.
・殴られたが青あざになって残っていた. He still had black and blue bruises 「where he was beaten [from the beating he got].
・道にスリップしたタイヤのが残っていた. There were tire skid marks on the 「street [road].
●残さない leave no trace behind; leave no signs
・かつての田園風景は, もはやそのをとどめていない. The rural landscape we used to see 「here [there] is no more, gone without leaving a trace.
●ブレーキをかけたから判断して, 同機は約 1,500 フィート横すべりしたものと見られる. To judge from the brake marks, it looks like the plane skidded (sideways) about 1,500 feet.
4 〔引き続き起こること・存在すること〕
●絶つ 〔なくす〕 put an end to…; wipe sth out of existence; 〔なくなる〕 come to an end; go out of existence; be 「blotted [wiped] out of existence; be stamped out; be exterminated
・その事件を最後に同国の内戦はを絶った. That event marked the end of the civil war in the aforesaid country.
・商品の評判がよくて, 客の注文がを絶たない. The product is so popular there's no end to the orders we're getting for it from people.
・犯罪[事故]がを絶たない. There's no end to crime [Accidents just keep on happening].
5 〔遺跡〕 a site; the remains [the ruins, the site] 《of…》.
●鎌倉幕府の the ancient site of the Kamakura Government House.
●その城のは今は立派な公園になっている. There is a fine park now where the castle once stood.
6 〔先例〕 a precedent; an example.
●ならう follow a precedent; follow the example 《of sb》.
7 〔跡継ぎ・後任〕 a successor. [⇒あと1 5.]
●へすわる 〔後任になる〕 succeed sb 「at a post [in a position]; occupy a seat 「left [vacated] by sb; step into sb's shoes.
●絶えた. The family line died out.
●継ぐ succeed sb as the head of the family
・父のを継ぐ succeed one's father; follow in one's father's footsteps
・…のを継いで 〔後任として〕 as successor 《to…》; succeeding sb
・息子にを譲る let one's son take over; pass the reins over to one's son
を取る succeed 《one's father》 as the head of the family; take over 《the family business from one's father》.
●佐々木氏が私のへすわる. Mr. Sasaki will 「take [succeed me in] my place. | Mr. Sasaki will take over from me.
